4. Precautions for Using the
Universal Smart Drive
It is important to ensure your computer has completed
the startup, before connecting the Universal Smart
Drive to the USB port. Also, ensure to properly disconnect
the Universal Smart Drive before turning your computer
OFF.
When removing the Universal Smart Drive from the
USB port, please ensure that the Red light on the
Universal Smart Drive is not flashing and that the
light is in fact Green. This will ensure that your
data on the device is not lost. It is very important
that you check the Universal Smart Drive light, although
the dialog box from your computer may show that the
data transfer has completed.
When disconnecting the Universal Smart Drive in Windows
Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you must select the
"Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon, which is
located at the bottom right corner of your screen
and follow the instructions before removing. If you
are using a Macintosh OS, we suggest that you use
the "Eject" or "Put Away" option
before disconnecting the Universal Smart Drive. If
you are using LINUX, you should unmount the Universal
Smart Drive before disconnecting.
If your operating system is Windows ME, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Macintosh Version 8.6 or higher or Linux
Kernel Version 2.4.x or higher, it is NOT required
to use the Auto-Run Program Package CD regarding driver
installation. If your operating system is Windows
98/SE, it is required that you install the Windows
98/SE drivers, which are included on the Auto-Run
Program Package CD (see section 7.Driver Installation
for Windows 98/SE).
5. How to Use the Universal Smart
Drive?
The Universal Smart Drive functions as a removable
disk drive when connected to the USB port of your
computer. You can copy or save data on the Universal
Smart Drive by using the Copy and Paste functions
or by dragging files and folders onto the drive icon,
just as you would when copying data to a hard disk
or to a floppy disk.
When the Universal Smart Drive is used for the first
time, or when the device driver is installed, remove
any other external drives and USB hubs from your computer
and close anyapplications.
5.1 Windows Operating
System
It is important to ensure that the USB controller
on your computer is activated, select the following
to determine this: "Control Panel" - "System
Properties" - "Device Manager"; it
is required that "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
appear in this area. If your computer does not have
USB controllers, your computer will not recognize
the Universal Smart Drive.

The Universal Smart Drive supports: Windows 98/SE,
Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP. If your operating
system is Windows 98/SE, it is required that you install
the Windows 98/SE drivers, which are included on the
Auto-Run Program Package CD (see section 7.Driver
Installation for Windows 98/SE).
When you connect the Universal Smart Drive to the
USB port of your PC, the "Removable Disk"
icon will appear on your desktop from "My Computer".
When you disconnect the Universal Smart Drive from
the USB port, the "Removable Disk" icon
will disappear. When disconnecting the Universal Smart
Drive in Windows Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you
must select the "Unplug or Eject Hardware"
icon, which is located at the bottom right corner
of your screen and follow the instructions before
removing.

You can determine if the USB controller is installed
properly by selecting "Control Panel" -
"System Properties" - "Device Manager",
the "USB Mass Storage Device" or "USB
disk controller" should appear under "Universal
Serial Bus controllers", "Disk drives",
and "Hard disk controllers". The 1GB Universal
Smart Drive will show "USB Mass Storage Device"
or "Generic USB Mass Storage" under "Universal
Serial Bus controllers", Disk drives" and
"SCSI controllers".

5.2 Macintosh Operating
System
The Universal Smart Drive supports Macintosh versions
8.6 or higher.
When you connect the Universal Smart Drive to the
USB port of your Mac, the "untitled" icon
will appear on your desktop. When you disconnect the
Universal Smart Drive from the USB port, the "untitled"
icon will disappear. It is required that you use the
"Eject" or "Put Away" option before
disconnecting the Universal Smart Drive; another option
would be to drag the "untitled" icon to
the "Trash" icon from your desktop.
